A Brief Introduction to Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire

Welwyn Garden City, not to be confused with Welwyn as it is sometimes incorrectly referred to, is a large town in the county of Hertfordshire. Welwyn itself is actually a village located several miles away. The population of the city is about forty-five thousand. The town is particularly notable for being a planned town signifying various cultural and social ideals of the period in which it was built.

The town was founded by the prominent urban planner, Sit Ebenezer Howard in the 1920s. As the name suggests, it was planned to be a garden city, being a type of planned city where agriculture, industry and residential areas were intricately planned around greenbelt land.

With an abundance of parkland, Welwyn Garden City is an attractive place and the centre was specifically designed to look beautiful and tranquil as the planner intended. There is also a prestigious shopping centre which is named after the town planner.
