Royalists Unit - Some Facts About Launceston

Launceston is a town just north of Cornwall just a short ways from the Devon border. It is sometimes called the gateway to Cornwall. Launceston has a motto that dates back to the 17th century, Royale et Loyale. This arose form the Civil War and support of the Royalists. Launceston also has a namesake town found on the island of Tasmania in Australia.

The location of the town was well executed as it is found on the side of the hill. This eliminates any possible flooding which can be a problem for other nearby towns. Much of the town has undergone a transformation in that it has seen a decrease in commercial industries in favor of larger business developments. Launceston has over 10 pubs where you can enjoy a drink as well as many cafes, restaurants and take away stores.

Each year in July is the Castle Rock music festival. This festival showcases many local bands.

The festival became a high profile event in 2003 when Capdown performed. Launceston is also featured in the novel Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier and was home to the poet Charles Causley.

The town itself came into existence due to the Launceston castle. This castle is a motte and bailey Norman castle that dates back to 1607. At one point in time the town had its own mint. During many battles the town has always remained in control by the royalists. Despite many attempts to overcome them. This can partially be due to the town's location as it has an excellent defensive position.

St Mary Magdalene church is an excellent example of a Tudor church and was built in the early 1500s. The original ornate carvings can still be viewed. The present church stands in the exact spot of an earlier church. This church is the only church in Launceston that is actually in the ecclesiastical parish.
